Despite a damp weather forecast threatening showers on Wednesday, July 22, twenty-one dedicated club members gathered at the clubrooms for our latest Mid-Week Run. While the predicted rain kept most of the classic fleet tucked safely away in garages-resulting in just two club-registered vehicles making the trip-the gloomy forecast did nothing to dampen the group's spirits.
Before hitting the road, everyone caught up over a welcoming round of hot coffee and biscuits. Once fueled and ready, the convoy departed for the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion. The drive north up the Calder Freeway required a little extra patience, as recent storm damage to the road surface slowed our progress, but the journey was well worth the wait.
Upon arriving, the skies cleared, and the forecast showers fortunately never materialised. The group began the visit with an insightful short video detailing the history and establishment of the Stupa, followed by a guided tour of the peaceful surrounding gardens. Walking through the Peace Park was a truly refreshing and pleasant experience, offering a quiet moment of reflection given recent world affairs. The gardens beautifully showcase areas and statues dedicated to many different global religions.
Moving past the gardens, we entered the majestic main building. As the largest Stupa in the Western World, it is a magnificent structure built to stand for at least 1,000 years. Inside, members were treated to an incredible display of historic golden religious artifacts and towering sculptures of Buddhist deities. For those who had visited the Stupa before, the real highlight was seeing the recently completed, vibrantly painted ceiling, which left a lasting impression on everyone.
The day concluded with a short drive into Bendigo for lunch at the Lake View Hotel. The hospitality was excellent; our meals arrived promptly, the portions were generous, and everything was absolutely delicious. With twenty-one members in attendance, it was a fantastic turnout for a mid-week event-and a particularly warm welcome goes out to the three new members who joined us for their very first run.
We look forward to seeing you all on the road again soon!
